[ISP] Two Men Suffer Multiple Trauma after Being Hit by Car
Start Date: 1/4/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/4/2014
Entry Description
Lake Station, Lake County-An early morning crash sent two men to the hospital with multiple traumas to their lower legs after being hit by an alleged intoxicated driver.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper John Holmen revealed that approximately 3:15 a.m., this Saturday, January 04, 2014, morning a 2003 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Alex Harwell, 31 of Flossmoor, Illinois was west bound on I-80 at the 13.3 mile marker (this is just east of Central Avenue) in the right lane when the Impala went off the road to the right hitting a disabled 2001 Mazda Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) sitting on the outer shoulder. The Mazda was occupied by David E Marshall, 51 of Hammond, Indiana who was sitting in the driver’s seat when his vehicle was sideswiped by the Impala.

Harwell continued west bound where there was a tow truck, owned by Ambassador Towing out of Hobart, which was parked in front of the disabled Impala on the right shoulder. The tow truck had all of his emergency lights activated at the time. The tow truck driver, Todd Cox, 26 of Lake Station, was standing outside the tow truck’s driver’s door wearing a fluorescent reflective jacket when he was hit by the Impala. Cox landed partially in the right lane and shoulder after being hit. Harwell after hitting Cox stopped on the right shoulder.

Harwell initially tried to portray himself to Trooper Holmen as a witness to the crash but evidence consistent with being involved in the crash pertaining to Harwell’s Chevrolet Impala showed that the Impala was directly involved.

Marshall and Cox were both taken to Saint Mary’s Medical Center in Hobart. Marshall’s left leg and ankle were broken and Cox sustained a dislocated shoulder, head injury and both legs being broken.

Harwell was arrested and taken to Lake County Jail in Crown Point for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) involving Serious Bodily Injury a Class D Felony-two charges and Unsafe Lane Movement (Harwell tested .13% B.A.C).

The right lane was closed for approximately 2 hours for reconstruction of the crash, removal of the injured and their vehicles.
