[ISP] Snow Hampers Traveling

Entry Description

Lowell, IN-Snow throughout the night has hampered commuting for travelers as the Indiana State Police answered numerous calls for service throughout the Lowell District. The Lowell District is comprised of Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Newton, Jasper, Pulaski and Starke Counties.

Between 7:00 p.m. last evening and 7:00 a.m. this morning the District has handled 84 calls which consisted of assisting motorists, slide-offs, property damage and personal injury crashes. The Lowell District currently has 4-6” of snowfall in the southern counties and 8-12” of snowfall in the northern counties.

The National Weather Service is predicting another 4-8” of new snow throughout the day and they say the snow could be heavy at times with temperature falling to around 11 degrees by 5 p.m., wind chill values as low as -9 degrees. Blustery, with a north wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph. A wind chill warning with a prolonged period of dangerously cold wind chills is likely tonight through Tuesday morning with the most extreme wind chills are likely to be late tonight through Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning. A prolonged period of wind chills lower than 30 below zero is predicted with wind chills of 40-50 below zero late tonight through Tuesday morning. The Indiana State Police are asking if you have plans to go out in the next 24-48 hours please rethink your trip. While the Indiana Department of Transportation has been working tirelessly and non-stop throughout this period road conditions can deteriorate rapidly with the ever changing weather and wind.
