[r55] Opportunities at the Statehouse
Start Date: 1/3/2014Start Time: 8:00 AM
End Date: 1/3/2014End Time: 8:00 AM
Entry Description
The 2014 legislative session of the Indiana General Assembly has officially begun! This is my second session as your state representative, and I could not be more excited to head back to the Statehouse and address issues impacting our community.

During the next couple months my columns will focus on keeping you updated with the latest information from Indianapolis. The policies and decisions made during session will help shape our state, and it’s important that I continue to provide our community with pertinent information throughout session and during the year.

Even though I’m in Indianapolis during the week, I encourage you to reach out to my office if you have a question or comment about what is going on in the Legislature. If you’re going to be in the Indianapolis area during the week, please feel free to make an appointment or to stop in and see me. I welcome any information you would like to share with me, and news from home is always appreciated!

One great opportunity available to students during session is to be a page in the House for a day. Students age 13-18 have the chance to witness floor sessions and committee meetings and help staff with daily tasks. They also take tours of the capitol building to places such as the governor’s office, the chambers of the Indiana House and Senate and the Indiana Supreme Court.

Pages are generally paired with the legislator from their area to give them the best idea of what their state representative does on an average day. Students who serve as pages get an excused absence from school and are responsible for their own transportation to and from Indianapolis. If you know a student who might be interested, encourage them or their parents to sign up online at www.in.gov/legislative/house_republicans under the Student Opportunities tab, or by emailing my office at h55@iga.in.gov or calling 317-232-9850.

Another opportunity for you to get caught up on Statehouse happenings is by attending legislative town hall meetings. Generally these meetings are held on Fridays or Saturdays and are open to the public. Legislators are available to give you an update of their legislation and to answer questions you may have regarding specific issues. Information about the dates and times of town halls near you will be available soon, so keep your eyes and ears open!

I want to thank you once again for allowing me the opportunity to serve as the state representative for House District 55. I will do my very best to represent your voice at the Statehouse this session and make decisions that will best serve our community.
