[r68] Wilber Curry honored with Sagamore Award
Start Date: 1/13/2014 All Day
End Date: 1/13/2014
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – On Saturday, State Representative Jud McMillin (R-Brookville) presented Wilber Curry with the Sagamore of the Wabash Award on behalf of Governor Mike Pence. At the award ceremony held at Union County High School, Curry was honored for devoting more than half of a century to serving Hoosiers in Southeast Indiana.

“Wilber has devoted most of his life to serving our community, so I was privileged to present him with the Sagamore Award,” said Rep. McMillin. “Union County High School was the perfect place for this ceremony considering he selflessly devoted 65 plus years to improving the lives of our communities’ children. We owe a debt of gratitude for his incredible contribution to our community as well as the positive impact he has had in so many lives.”

For more than half of a century, Curry has served Southeast Indiana in a variety of roles. For 37 years, he worked at Kroger Company and received an award for outstanding community service. Formally, he was the President of the Board of Directors of the Union County Council’s Aging and Aged Committee. Additionally, he was a Cub Scout leader for over 27 years in which he was presented with the Outstanding District Award for Merit.

Curry was also a school bus driver, a Little League Association leader and served as a member of the Union County Cancer Society. Active in his church, he serves as a Sunday School Teacher, a speaker and a lay preacher.

“When I was growing up, I was always taught to put the needs of others before my own,” said Rep. McMillin. “Wilber has lived this principle by spending countless hours volunteering, and he is certainly deserving of Indiana’s highest distinction. I was honored to have presented it to him.”

The Sagamore is the highest honor that the governor can bestow and is only presented to distinguished Hoosiers who have made incredible contributions to the state.
