[ISP] One Seriously Injured in I-65 Crash
Start Date: 1/16/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/16/2014
Entry Description

Jackson County: The mid morning snow today made for significant travel difficulties throughout the Versailles District. Throughout the day Indiana State Police along with local and county law enforcement agencies have been dealing with numerous crashes and slide offs related to the snowy, slick road conditions. Fortunately, most of these incidents have not resulted in serious injury. However, at approximately 11:00 troopers responded to numerous crashes on I-65 at the 45.5 mile marker in Jackson County as a result of several crashes on the bridge one of which resulted in serious injury to a Scottsburg man. According to Senior Trooper Stephen Wheeles, a 2005 Peterbuilt flatbed wrecker driven by 34 year old Roger J. Popp of Indianapolis was stopped on the bridge at the 45.5 mile marker southbound due to other crashes in the area when a 1991 Toyota pickup truck driven by 22 year old Austin T. Ahart of Scottsburg was unable to get stopped due to the slick road surface and crashed into the rear of the Peterbuilt. Ahart sustained serious head injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour then was transferred to University Hospital in Louisville. Popp was uninjured. The crashes caused southbound I-65 to be closed for nearly an hour while troopers cleared the crashes and INDOT crews treated the roadway.

The crash remains under investigation. S/Tpr. Wheeles was assisted at the scene by other troopers and Jackson County EMS.

Motorists are cautioned when traveling in snowy conditions as roadways can become very slick and hazardous in a very short time. Elevated roadways such as bridges and overpasses freeze more quickly than other sections of roadway and motorists are reminded to slow down in such conditions. Although slick and hazardous roadways are most often contributing factors in weather related crashes, unsafe speed is normally the primary cause. Even if a vehicle is being operated below the posted speed limit, the speed can still be too fast for conditions.
