Young initiatives supporting Hoosier veterans pass Senate committee
Start Date: 1/21/2014
End Date: 1/21/2014
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS – On Tuesday, the Senate Homeland Security, Transportation and Veterans Affairs Committee considered a measure authored by State Senator Richard D. Young, Jr. (D-Milltown) that would create a hiring preference for veterans applying for state employment. Sen. Young said this legislation originated from committee testimony he heard this summer demonstrating the need for a state employment hiring preference.

“There are many other companies in Indiana that provide a similar kind of preference for veterans, but the state of Indiana does not presently have that policy,” said Sen. Young. “With the extremely high unemployment rate among veterans in the state of Indiana, I feel we must do everything we can as a state to bring that number down.”

Senate Bill (SB) 300 would allow eligible veterans that have been honorably discharged to receive preference points when being considered for full-time employment with the state of Indiana. Each individual being considered for state employment is evaluated on a point system. Under SB 300, if a veteran is qualified and being considered for a position with the state, they would be awarded 10% of the total amount of points and disabled veterans would be awarded 15% of the total amount of points.

The committee also approved SB 354, a measure co-authored by Sen. Young, which would create a Hoosier Women Veterans Program through the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA). This program would provide information and services specific to the needs of female veterans. IDVA would establish a program coordinator to perform outreach and make recommendations in order to more effectively address the needs of female Hoosier veterans.

“Indiana is one of the few states that doesn’t have a women veterans coordinator in a time when more women than ever are serving in the United States Armed Forces,” said Sen. Young. “Indiana must have a program in place in order to effectively address the needs of this underserved population of Hoosier veterans.”

SB 300 and SB 354 both passed the committee by unanimous votes and will now move to the Senate chamber for full consideration.

Sen. Young represents Senate District 47 which encompasses portions of Crawford, Dubois, Harrison, Orange, Perry and Washington counties. For more information on Sen. Young, his legislative agenda or other State Senate business, call 1-800-382-9467 or visit www.IN.gov/s47.
