[r21] Rep. Wesco supports Suits and Sneakers to raise awareness of the fight against cancer
Start Date: 1/28/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/28/2014
Entry Description
STATEHOUSE – State Representative Tim Wesco (R-Osceola) and House legislators and staff wore sneakers at the Statehouse on Thursday to participate in the Suits and Sneakers challenge to support the fight against cancer.

The annual Suits and Sneakers challenge, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, asks individuals to step up in the fight against cancer by raising awareness about the critical role that nutrition and physical activity play in reducing the risk of this disease. According to the organization, every one in three cancer deaths are caused by issues relating to nutrition and physical activity. In 2013 alone, there were 35,550 new cases of cancer in the state of Indiana.

“Cancer does not discriminate its victims. It can affect anyone and everyone,” said Rep. Wesco. “Throughout Indiana and beyond, folks are joining together to stand up to cancer and help support the efforts to find a cure. My thoughts and prayers go out to all who are engaged in a battle with this disease.”

Wearing sneakers is much more than a fashion statement. It is a simple way to spotlight the fact that cancer is the second most common cause of death in the U.S. – exceeded only by heart disease, which accounts for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths. It is also an opportunity to remind people about all the ways they can reduce their risk of cancer; like eating right, exercising, making healthy lifestyle choices and following the American Cancer Society’s recommended cancer screening guidelines.

“The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and Indiana collegiate coaches have formed a partnership again this year to raise awareness about cancer. This partnership provides the legislature a great opportunity to help raise awareness and to show our fellow Hoosiers they’re not alone in the fight against cancer. Until a cure is found, we need to continue to promote the steps people can take to reduce their risk for cancer and to show compassion and support for those who are affected by this disease,” said House Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis).
