RELEASE: Lanane Military Family Relief Fund measure moves to House
Start Date: 2/4/2014 All Day
End Date: 2/4/2014
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS- The Senate approved a proposal on Monday allowing the Military Family Relief Fund (MFRF) to give priority to qualified service members and their descendants if they have not yet received grants. Senate Bill (SB) 352, a proposal championed by Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D- Anderson), would expand the time that qualified service members and their families are eligible for grants.

“Those service members and military families that were originally put on the back burner when waiting for a MFRF grant should be given priority in order to receive assistance that is long overdue,” said Sen. Lanane. “These service members made the commitment to serve their country, and it is our duty to make sure that we assist them in any way possible.”

This proposal will also remove the provision that limits eligibility for grants. Currently, service members are only eligible within three years after their active-duty service ends. The Veteran’s Affairs Commission, with the approval of the State Budget Agency, will set the maximum dollar amount available for MFRF grants.

“Some of these service members or families of service members may be reliant on these grants to keep financially afloat,” said Sen. Lanane. “We cannot take away these grants after three years when so many of these people are still in need of financial assistance, whether for housing, food, or medical services.”

Approved by the Senate 48-0, the proposal now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

Sen. Lanane represents Indiana Senate District 25 includes the portions of Madison and Delaware counties, including the City of Muncie and portions of the City of Anderson.
