End Date: 2/5/2014
Entry Description
Newton County-Today at approximately 9:03 a.m. CDT on I-65 northbound near the 231 mile marker (one mile north of the SR 10 exit), a vehicle failed to slow down and ran into three other vehicles causing serious injuries to one driver.

Preliminary investigation by Senior Trooper Fred Trammel has revealed that a white 2006 Volvo owned by UROL Express out of Summit, IL pulling a trailer loaded with bags of salt, failed to slow for traffic. A white 2001 Freightliner owned by Thomason Express out of Marion, IL and driven by Robert L. Brawley 55 years old from West Frankfort, IL was at the back of the line slowing for a crash that had occurred in front of him. The driver of the 2006 Volvo failed to see traffic slowed until it was too late. The Volvo went off the left side of the roadway, went into the snow covered left berm, over corrected and started to jack knife when the Volvo Struck the rear of Brawley’s trailer. The trailer of the Volvo then crushed the Volvo between the trailers and pinned the driver inside of the truck.

Brawley’s rig was then shoved into a red 2011 Kenworth owned by Brand Trucking out of Fargo, ND and driven by John G. Tollefson 59 years old from St. Michael, ND. Tollefson’s rig was pushed into a maroon 2007 Freightliner owned by Jet Transport out of Chicago and driven by Jose J. Solis, 26 years old from Chicago.

The driver of the white Volvo was the only one injured. He was extricated from his truck and transported by Newton County EMS to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point, IN with possible life threatening injuries. His name is being withheld pending notification of family. All other driver’s refused treatment at the scene. Seatbelts were in use by all drivers. The investigation is continuing.

Assisting at the scene was the Lowell Fire Department, Lincoln Township Fire Department, Newton County EMS, Village Motors and Cheever’s. The interstate was closed for about four hours for cleanup of the scene, transportation of injured and investigation of the crash. No citations have been issued at this time.
