[76] Indiana House of Representatives gives back to the community
Start Date: 2/19/2014Start Time: 9:30 AM
Entry Description
Monday, State Representative Wendy McNamara (R-Mount Vernon), along with fellow House legislators and staff, joined students at the Shepherd Community Center in Indianapolis to read to students as part of a bipartisan House service day.

House members brought their favorite children’s books to read to underprivileged kindergartners and first and second grade students at Shepherd Community. The Shepherd Community Center is dedicated to supporting impoverished children in the fight against poverty. Rep. McNamara read Clifford Goes to School.

“Providing the best education possible to children is one of my main priorities as a State Representative,” said Rep. McNamara. “It’s great to interact with elementary children one–on-one and show them our support of their education. Reading comprehension is such an essential part of a student’s personal, academic and future growth as it lays the foundation for their life moving forward. A great school and education system can lift students, families and communities from all socioeconomic challenges, and it’s great to see this school working towards that goal.”

Children living in poverty are more likely to be further behind their peers when they begin their K-12 education. These children are less likely to be enrolled in pre-K programs or have meaningful educational experiences prior to entering kindergarten. A child in an impoverished family is read to an average of 25 hours before they start kindergarten, compared to an average of 1,000 hours for children of middle-class families.

“Being at Shepard Community Center and seeing all the work communities are doing to give Indiana children the best education possible was fun and inspiring,” said Rep. McNamara.

More information about Shepherd Community Center can be found on their website at www.shepherdcommunity.org.
