Start Date: 2/20/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 2/20/2014
Entry Description

Gary, Lake County-A semi went off the roadway on the Indiana Toll Road hit a disabled car and then rolled over losing its load of apples.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Chad Stanek revealed that at approximately 4:14 a.m., this Thursday morning, February 20, 2014 a disabled silver 2005 Buick, driven by L.C. Pitts, 61 of Elgin, Illinois, was legally parked on the outer shoulder of I80/90 west bound at the 9 mile marker (this is just east of Cline Avenue) with its hazard warning lights on when a blue 2006 Freightliner semi pulling a box trailer, driven by Odil A. Sharipov, 27 of Vancouver, Washington, went off the road and hit the Buick. Pitts was inside the Buick at the time of the crash waiting for a tow truck. The Freightliner after hitting the Buick went off the road to the right and came to rest in the north ditch on its side. It was not raining at the time of the crash.

The semi, owned by UZST Transportation out of Bolingbrook, Illinois, was loaded with 43,000 pounds of boxed apples. The top of the semi’s trailer was ripped open and part of the load was lost.

Pitts was taken to Saint Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago with non-life threatening injuries.

Sharipov who was wearing his seat belt was not injured. Sharipov was cited for Unsafe Lane Movement.

The Buick was totaled and the semi also had extensive damage.

The right lane was closed until 7:22 a.m. for removal of the injured and Buick and investigation of the crash. The semi will be removed later this morning.
