[ISP] Semi Loses Load of Scrap Metal on Cline
Start Date: 2/25/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 2/25/2014
Entry Description

Hammond, Lake County-A semi driver took the I-80 eastbound to north bound Cline Avenue ramp too fast causing his load of scrap metal to shift and rolled his semi onto its side.

Preliminary investigation by Senior Trooper Dwayne Halliburton revealed that at approximately 11:50 a.m., this Tuesday, February 25, 2014, morning, a 2000 Peterbilt semi pulling a dump trailer, owned by Scott Hansen Trucking out of New Berlin, Wisconsin, and driven by Gerald L. Bester, 46 of Racine, Wisconsin was on the east bound I-80 (Borman Expressway) to Cline Avenue north bound ramp when he took the ramp too fast causing his load to shift.

Bester was hauling approximately 73,000 pounds of bundled scrap metal. He was coming from Racine, Wisconsin going to East Chicago. As Bester came around the curve the semi rolled over onto to its driver’s side and most of his load spilled out on the shoulder of the ramp and over the concrete barrier wall onto north bound Cline Avenue. A 2004 Ford F250 pick-up driven by Ruben Deleon, 47 of Merrillville was north bound on Cline in the right lane and was unable to avoid hitting one of the bundled scrap metal that was laying in the road.

Neither driver was injured.

Bester was cited for Speed too Fast to Avoid a Collision and Unsecure Load.

Both lanes of north bound Cline were closed for approximately 45 minutes for removal of the scrap metal and towing of the Ford pick-up. One lane of the I-80 east bound to north bound Cline Avenue ramp is open at this time.

Assisting: Sergeant Wanda Clay and Trooper Nedal Nabhan of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Gary EMS and Waffco Towing.
