[SOS] Secretary of State Connie Lawson’s statement on Warrick County’s voting system announcement
Start Date: 3/3/2014 All Day
End Date: 3/3/2014
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS (March 3, 2014) “I’m deeply concerned about the report out of Warrick County today that more than 3,700 absentee ballots were not counted during the November 2012 General Election. I appreciate Warrick County Clerk Sarah Redman bringing this to our attention and for immediately investigating this matter.

“In the interest of integrity for the upcoming election, I am calling on the independent, non-partisan Voting System Technical Oversight Program (VSTOP) to conduct a complete review of the MicroVote report and of voting tabulation procedures used in November 2012 by MicroVote, the election system vendor. I am considering conducting a formal inquiry regarding MicroVote after I see VSTOP’s independent review.

“Warrick County employed a MicroVote technician in November of 2012 to program their voting machines. MicroVote says absentee ballots cast before election day in the clerk’s office on MicroVote equipment were not counted due to their technician’s procedural error.  It is imperative that Hoosier voters and taxpayers be able to rely on those who are hired by counties to perform the critical task of correctly counting votes in each election. I intend to work with VSTOP and our county officials to ensure that public confidence remains high.

“In the meantime, VSTOP has agreed to develop a best audit practice for counties that used a MicroVote programming technician.  VSTOP will be reaching out to counties to facilitate this review process.”
