Child care safety measure clears Senate

INDIANAPOLIS— The Indiana Senate approved a House proposal,36-12, sponsored by State Senator Greg Taylor (D-Indianapolis) to establish child care provider requirements for funding eligibility. The bill will create safety regulations that all child care facilities must follow in order to receive Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) grants.

“No child care facility should be exempt from following safety regulations meant to protect our children,” said Sen. Taylor. “Unsupervised children, sub-par sanitation standards, and a lack of safety conditions are completely unacceptable for our families.”

In order to be one step closer toward closing the gap in safety standards, staff-to-child ratios are being modified and annual, 12-hour long training sessions for all supervisors and mandatory reports of suspected child abuse will be required.

Sen. Taylor hopes to see state-wide regulations that will monitor all child care facilities and enforce equal safety and educational standards for all young Hoosiers.

“All child care facilities should be meeting minimum state standards for health and safety, if not going the extra distance to ensure quality supervision, nutrition, and activities for children,” said Sen. Taylor.

Sen. Taylor represents Senate District 33 which includes portions of Wayne, Pike, Washington and Center townships in Marion County. For more information on Sen. Taylor, his legislative agenda or other State Senate business call 1-800-382-9467 or visit
