Hume school building safety proposal gains final passage

INDIANAPOLIS- On Wednesday, the Indiana Senate gave final approval to a measure authored by State Senator Lindel Hume (D-Princeton) ensuring that schools are meeting safety and security guidelines to keep students and faculty safe.

Senate Bill (SB) 344 establishes the Division of School Building Physical Security and Safety within the Department of Education. The division must develop and advise school corporations on nonbinding safety guidelines for new buildings, renovations, repairs, or alterations.

“We must make sure emergency protocols are in place and that we are using top engineers and architects to improve physical security within our school buildings,” said Sen. Hume. “Children and faculty should feel protected knowing that new and renovated buildings were upgraded properly and with the newest safety features.”

School corporations are required to take the safety specifications under advisement when planning for construction. The division will maintain a public website with information on the best practices pertaining to school safety or security, as well as, a private website to specifically inform school officials and public safety officials on updated safety procedures or responding to a natural disaster.

After gaining final passage from the Senate by a vote of 48-1, SB 344 now moves to the governor for his consideration.

Hume represents Indiana Senate District 48 which includes portions of Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Pike, Spencer and Warrick Counties. For more information on Sen. Hume his legislative agenda or other State Senate business call 1-800-382-9467 or visit
