Entry Description
High School Diplomas for our Veterans

As a veteran, I understand the sacrifices that our soldiers make to protect our country. They not only give time, go through combat and endure grueling conditions, they also surrender other opportunities. There are many Hoosier veterans who postponed their academic careers so that they could serve and protect our country.

I recently learned of a program offered by the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs which offers veterans the opportunity to earn their high school diplomas. Their selfless devotion to our country deserves the highest recognition, and this is a way for those who serve, especially at a young age, to be better equipped to join the workforce following duty.

For those who have made this sacrifice, it is never too late to get a diploma or even a college degree.  The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs has a program in place for World War I, World War II, Korean and Vietnam War veterans to get their high school diplomas upon returning from duty.

Any veteran who has served between April 6, 1917 and November 11, 1918 (World War I), December 7, 1941 and December 31, 1946 (World War II), June 27, 1950 and January 31, 1955 (Korean) or August 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975 (Vietnam) is eligible to apply for issuance of a high school diploma to the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

I encourage anyone who fits the criteria outlined to consider applying. The requirements are broad in an effort to urge troops that are in this situation to get their high school diplomas.  Veterans must have attended a public or nonpublic high school in Indiana prior to joining the military and have been a student in good standing with an honorable discharge from the armed forces of the United States. The veteran considering the program would also have had to have left high school for military service. Many of their service experiences may qualify for high school credit.

The application can be acquired by calling the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs at 1-800-400-4520 or on their website at http://www.in.gov/dva/2388.htm. You may also contact my legislative assistant at 1-800-382-9841. The name and address of the last school which was attended by the veteran is required on the application, along with the branch of military the veteran served. The diploma is typically issued through the local school system at which the veteran has attended.

Our armed forces selflessly serve to protect the ideals we covet in this country: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  I am proud of Indiana for offering such meaningful reparations for those who have served, and as a veteran myself, I hope those who fit the description take advantage of this program and get their high school diplomas.
