[76] Bill to help address Meth problem heads to governor’s desk
Start Date: 3/14/2014Start Time: 9:00 AM
Entry Description
House Bill (HB) 1141, authored by State Representative Wendy McNamara (R-Mount Vernon), was concurred upon in the House of Representatives yesterday. This bill will give better direction to deal with properties that have been affected by methamphetamine.

“I am very happy to see this bill come out of conference committee and be heading to the Governor,” said Rep. McNamara. “The goal of this legislation is to provide transparency and ease of mind to our communities in response to the destruction meth leaves in its wake.   This bill will positively affect Indiana neighborhoods and offer an effective solution to an ongoing problem.”

HB 1141 will provide a clearer history on homes by listing on a realtor’s disclosure statement, elaborating on whether methamphetamine had been manufactured or dumped on a property.  Additionally, contaminated properties will be posted on the Indiana State Police website and removed once decontaminated.

HB 1141 aims to make positive changes in the health and safety of Indiana communities while increasing cooperation and collaboration between state agencies. By encouraging renovations and decontamination of properties that have been affected by meth, this bill looks to increase property value through getting rid of blighted homes.

“This legislation hopes to address not only the health issues related to meth manufacture, but also the economic blight created in communities impacted by manufacture and dumping of meth. Hoosiers will now have the opportunity to be aware of the risks associated with tainted properties and have the ability to track the efforts to reintroduce remediated properties and reinvigorate communities touched by the ruin of meth,” said Rep. McNamara.
