Successful Finish to the 2014 Legislative Session

Entry Description
My second session as your state representative has come to a close, and I would like to sincerely thank our community for allowing me the honor of being your voice at the Statehouse. We came together and addressed many key issues that are important to Hoosiers throughout the state.

Much of my time and energy over the past three months was dedicated to our legislative agenda, focusing on some key issues that will help Indiana remain the best place in the Midwest to do businesses as well as a great place to live and raise a family.

In order to ensure that we are providing employers who come to our state with the best economic climate possible and a workforce ready to tackle the demands of high-wage, high demand positions, we passed legislation providing grants to school corporations who partner with businesses for internships. This will encourage students to take advantage of opportunities to be prepared for the working world upon graduation.

Another way to ensure that our state has a great workforce for employers is to start with high-quality early education, giving young children the best possible start to their schooling. Last year, House Republicans first introduced the concept of a preschool pilot program and took a small step toward our goal. This session, we successfully passed legislation establishing a preschool pilot program for low-income families in five counties throughout Indiana. Currently, Indiana is only one of 10 states that does not offer a state-funded preschool program. We need to remedy this situation and ensure that all children have the chance to reach their full potential and become productive, fulfilled members of society.

We also passed policies phasing down the corporate income and financial institutions tax rates to 4.9 percent by 2022, giving Indiana the second lowest corporate income tax rate in the nation. Businesses are encouraged to move to locations where the policies are pro-business and the workers are skilled and ready.

In addition to this legislation, much of my second session was dedicated to the Committee on Family, Children and Human Affairs. As the vice-chairman, I took it upon myself to make sure that every bill passed out of the committee truly improves Indiana’s familial environment. Helping children and families is truly where my passion lies, and I still feel incredibly blessed to serve in this position.

Even though the 2014 session is over for the 118th Indiana General Assembly, legislators still have work to do. I am back home in our district and will be even more accessible to the people of our community. Please feel free to reach out to me any time with any questions or concerns or with ideas for legislation for next year. Email h55@in.gov or call 317-232-9850.
