[DCS] Fulton County DCS Recruiting Foster Parents: Informational Meetings set during Child Abuse Prevention Month
Start Date: 3/31/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/31/2014
Entry Description

ROCHESTER, Ind. (March 31, 2014)—The Fulton County office of the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) is always looking for adults with a strong desire to invest in the future. These potential foster parents are selfless caregivers willing to provide temporary supervision and stability for children during a challenging time in the children’s lives. Since April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Fulton County DCS office has scheduled three informational meetings for prospective foster parents on Saturday, April 12 in Rochester.

“When we have to remove children from an unsafe situation, they need a safe, nurturing family environment to live in while we work with them and their parents to make the home safe,” said Lee Sones, director of the Fulton County DCS office. “One of the most important things people in the community can do to help abused and neglected children is to be available as foster parents.”

Foster parents can be stay-at-home parents or they can work outside the home. They may rent or own their own house, apartment or condominium, as long as it meets safety standards. Besides providing food and shelter, they assist with practical needs like helping with visits with the child’s family, taking them to any needed therapy sessions, medical and other appointments and ensuring there are extra-curricular activities.

Local foster parents are especially needed so school-age children removed from their homes can continue to attend their own school and maintain contact with their friends. Those willing to foster teenagers or sibling groups are particularly desired.

Each informational meeting will be led by foster care specialists from the Fulton County DCS office. Foster parent responsibilities will be discussed as well as the licensing process, including the home study. In addition, a licensed foster parent will be on hand to answer questions. A willingness to step up and help a child in need is the most important prerequisite for becoming a foster parent.

The April 12 informational meetings will take place at the Fulton County DCS office, 1920 Rhodes Street in Rochester. Thirty-minute meetings will begin at 10 am, 10:45 am and 11:30 am.

To help increase awareness about child abuse prevention during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Fulton County DCS office is coordinating a special Pinwheels for Prevention event April 8. The Honorable A. Christopher Lee, Fulton County Circuit Court Judge, and Melissa Beck, director of the Fulton County court-appointed special advocate (CASA) program, as well as others, will make short remarks during the 7:30 pm event on the lawn of the Fulton County Courthouse, 815 Main St. in Rochester.

There are more than 4,700 abused or neglected Hoosier children currently living in non-relative foster homes because it is unsafe for them to live in their own homes. In Fulton County, 23 abused or neglected children live in foster homes.
