Bill protecting high school student athletes signed into law

STATEHOUSE- State Representative Lloyd Arnold (R-Leavenworth) sponsored Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 222, which protects high school athletes from furthering the negative effects of concussions. The bill was signed into law today.

SEA 222 adds to an existing law that requires coaches to remove athletes suspected of having a concussion from continuing to play. This legislation added that the student athlete removed from play must wait at least 24 hours before being able to return to the sport. This will give more time for coaches and students to evaluate the potential of a concussion before a student could make the condition worse.

“As a parent and a legislator, the safety of our student athletes is a priority of mine,” said Rep. Arnold. “I was proud to sponsor this legislation which adds another layer of protection for our student athletes and works to prevent further injuries from occurring.”

The bill also requires head and assistant coaches of high school football teams to complete a concussions safety course every two years. In committee, SEA 222 was supported by Rep. Arnold, USA Football, the Indiana Department of Education and the Insurance Institute of Indiana.

“I have gone through this training as a football coach myself so I fully understand the importance of the training,” said Rep. Arnold. “By passing this measure, the General Assembly made Indiana’s football fields a little safer for our student athletes.”
