[r76] Helping Hoosier Veterans: Part 2
Start Date: 4/11/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 4/11/2014
Entry Description
Last week, I spoke about a former student of mine and the great work he was doing with the organization Solider Dogs for Independence. This week I would like to recognize two other organizations in our area that help American heroes.

The Indiana Patriot Guard Riders was incorporated in 2006 and was formed to honor the military and their families. The Patriot Guard is a non-profit organization that honors those who risk their lives for America’s freedom and security. Their main goal is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family and pay their respects.

When required, The Patriot Guard shield’s the mourning family and friends from interruptions created by protest groups. They accomplish this through a strictly non-violent policy. The organization welcomes veterans and non-veterans as well as non-bike riders. If you would like to join the organization or find out ways you can help in their efforts email the South West Senior Ride Captain Rick Williams, at

Another great organization in our area is Rolling Thunder. Rolling Thunder is a non-profit organization and was incorporated in 1995. This origination has grown to over 90 chartered chapters throughout the United States and abroad. Members or the organization are young and old, men and women, veterans and non-veterans all united in the cause to bring accountability for the Prisoners Of War-Missing in Action.

Rolling Thunder is meant to educate the public that many American Prisoners of War were left behind and to help protect the future veterans from being left behind should they become Missing in Action.  Currently, Rolling Thunder has four chapters in Indiana. If you would like to join Rolling Thunder call 812-401-5717 or email

These organizations are doing great work every day to make life a little easier for veterans and their families. This past session, state legislators and I did the same by supporting House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1242 which was the employment discrimination against veteran’s bills. HEA 1242 goes into effect July 1, and makes it illegal for employers to discriminate against veterans in hiring practices. Many times this discrimination materialized because of the possibility of deployment or even days needed off for military training. This bill is a major step forward in reducing Indiana’s 16.9 percent veteran unemployment rate. Please take the time to get involved with one of many veteran organizations in our area and take the opportunity to thank a Veteran today.
