Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana’s Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program was recognized last week at the 31st JAG Annual National Training Seminar in Orlando, Florida, for leading the nation in postsecondary scholarship money awarded. Hoosier JAG students have been awarded more than $10.3 million in scholarship funds this year, which was significantly more than any other state and $4 million more than the second highest achieving state program.

”The role Jobs for America’s Graduates plays in preparing Indiana’s young people for education and employment success cannot be overstated,” said Governor Pence. “I applaud the work of Indiana’s exceptional JAG program, its students, and their classroom specialists for helping and inspiring young Hoosiers to reach their full potential through high school graduation and beyond. We look forward to the program’s continued growth and success in the years to come.”

Indiana’s JAG program also was recognized for achieving all performance goals in 17 different programs across the state. Five of Indiana’s 12 workforce investment regions were also acknowledged for achieving all program goals. Nine Hoosier JAG classroom teachers or “Specialists” were named 2014 “Outstanding JAG Specialists,” and three Indiana JAG program management staff members were recognized for being national high performers.

“I am very proud of all of our JAG students for their hard work and diligence this year,” said Scott B. Sanders, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. “They are a testament to the success of Indiana’s JAG program and are a great reflection of all the time and effort spent by Indiana’s dedicated JAG Coordinators and Specialists to make such a great impact on the lives of all Hoosier JAG participants.”

JAG is a state-based national non-profit organization dedicated to reconnecting students academically by helping them overcome barriers to graduation. Shortly after the Governor took office in 2013, the Indiana General Assembly appropriated the first-ever state funding for JAG-Indiana.  The appropriation provides $6 million each year of this biennium and will allow for JAG-Indiana to grow from serving roughly 60 locations and 3,000 young people to 118 programs and more than 6,000 young people by the end of this year.

Since 2006, the Indiana JAG program has served more than 9,000 Hoosier students. The JAG program encourages students to stay in school through graduation, pursue post-secondary education and secure quality entry-level jobs leading to career advancement opportunities.

JAG students receive adult mentoring while in school and one year of follow-up counseling after graduation.  Indiana’s program consistently graduates approximately 90 percent of participants and many students choose to continue their education after high school. The JAG program is funded through grants provided by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
