[IDEM] Deep River TMDL Final Public Meeting
Start Date: 7/14/2014Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Date: 7/14/2014End Time: 4:00 PM
Entry Description
Location: Hobart Community Center, 111 E. Old Ridge Rd., Hobart, IN 46342.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) invites you to participate in a public meeting to learn about the results of the water quality monitoring of the Deep River-Portage Burns Watershed and the TMDL.

What is a Total Maximum Daily Load?
A Total Maximum Daily Load, or TMDL, is the maximum amount of a pollutant that a waterbody can receive and still meet water quality standards. A TMDL is the sum of the allowable loads of a single pollutant from all contributing point and nonpoint sources. The calculation must include a margin of safety to ensure that the waterbody can be used for the purposes the State has designated. IDEM is developing TMDLs for impaired waters in Indiana to characterize the causes of the impairments and identify potential sources of pollution.

What are the water quality impairments in the Deep River-Portage Burns Watershed?
The Deep River-Portage Burns watershed has several streams that are impaired for E. coli, Impaired Biotic Community, siltation, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients. IDEM has developed a TMDL for the entire Deep River-Portage Burns watershed.

How can I help to improve our water quality?
You can help by attending this meeting and learning about the TMDL and the development of a watershed management plan. At this meeting, IDEM will provide an overview of the TMDL and monitoring results on the Deep River-Portage Burns watershed. The watershed group will provide information on how to get involved with the development of the watershed management plan.

We look forward to your participation in completing this TMDL and assisting in improving the water quality in the Deep River-Portage Burns Watershed.
