[r29] Column: Working together strengthens our community

Entry Description
Working together strengthens our community

Communities are like families. We celebrate holidays together, help those in need and support each another through life’s greatest challenges. One thing that has always drawn me to Noblesville is the sense of family that exists and that everyone works together to create a better, stronger community.

Since I first began serving as your state representative, my goal has always been to strengthen our community and make decisions that better the lives of those I represent. Over the years, it has been my honor to accomplish this by passing new laws. In fact, much of the legislation I have worked on or supported has resulted from someone in our community calling me with an issue or emailing about a problem they are facing. This year was no different.

In recent columns, I have mentioned some of the new laws we passed to benefit veterans, improve our roads or boost Hoosier agriculture, and a majority of these laws went into effect on July 1. Since I mentioned just a fraction of the laws we passed this year, I thought I would take some time to review additional legislation that I believe benefit families and students in our community.

As many of you know, I am a huge fan of Noblesville sports. Recently, the Millers baseball team won the state championship. I always love attending games, cheering for the home team and supporting Noblesville’s incredible student athletes. Not only do these sporting events provide a great way for the community to come together, but the entire experience is extremely rewarding for the athlete as well.

Sports, like baseball, softball and football, are a great way to help students maintain an active lifestyle and learn how to work as a team, but unfortunately, there are certain risks-factors to every sport. That is why I was proud to support Senate Enrolled Act 222 this session, which is a new law that requires football coaches to complete a course concerning player safety and concussions at least once every two years.

This law would also require a 24-hour sit-out period for any football player that displays symptoms of a concussion or head injury on the field. By supporting this legislation, I wanted to ensure that our student athletes are better protected so they can enjoy all the benefits of playing sports while remaining incident-free.

Another new law we passed to benefit athletes was House Enrolled Act 1290. This law requires the Department of Education to provide guidelines and training tools to educate student athletes and their families as well as equip athletic trainers to detect some of the early indicators of a heart problem. This new law would require any high school athlete who is suspected of experiencing a symptom of sudden cardiac arrest to be removed from the athletic activity at the time the symptom is identified. Their parent or legal guardian will be notified, and they cannot return to play until their parent or legal guardian has provided verbal permission to the coach.

Through these new laws, I was proud to protect athletes in our community and provide coaches and family members with more knowledge, which could potentially be life-saving. As a fan of Noblesville sports, I want to ensure that our athletes are able to enjoy and continue doing what they love while remaining as safe as possible. I encourage you to look up these and other new laws by visiting iga.in.gov. As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the new laws we passed this year.

Like I mentioned, many of the bills we enact are in response to issues impacting our community, so I encourage you to contact me with any concerns you would like me to address in the next legislative session. We are a community, and much like a family, it is important that we continue to work together to improve our district and state.
