Designated cultural districts in Indiana:

Tippecanoe Arts and Cultural District
Carmel Arts and Design District
Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD)
Columbus Arts District
Nashville Arts and Entertainment District
Madison Arts and Cultural District

The Indiana Statewide Cultural District Program will award new designations in 2017. Learn more about applying for the program here.

This program offers Indiana communities an official state designation that provides significant opportunities in the marketing and promotion of cultural activities that support vibrancy and economic development.

The Indiana Statewide Cultural District Program seeks to make a stronger Indiana through arts and culture and has identified three areas of impact through which its work will be validated:

  1. The arts and cultural sector is an integral part of community and economic development.
  2. Cultural districts facilitate strong, creative, sustainable communities.
  3. Vibrant arts and cultural energy sectors thrive throughout the state.

Communities that exemplify the program’s criteria are awarded designation as an Indiana Statewide Cultural District. Read the full criteria here.

  • Community Profile and District Identity: The cultural district has a distinct, creative character and a strong, lasting connection to the community.
  • Cultural Development: The cultural district is a vibrant center of culture, sparking the development of cultural assets that are integral to the community. It also encourages the exploration of and participation in cultural experiences through arts and culture.
  • Community Development: The community is being strengthened through partnerships by engaging local residents in community-building events rooted in arts and culture.
  • Economic Development and Tourism: The cultural district is leveraged as an integral piece of the community’s economic development strategy.
  • Cultural District Management and Planning: Adequate management has been provided for the cultural district throughout its lifespan. The cultural district has a plan for developing and sustaining itself.
