Arts In Education Grantees' Projects
The Arts in Education (AIE) grant program is funded entirely from investment income generated by the sale of Indiana's Celebrate the Arts license plate. Recipients of AIE grants use the funds for a variety of different type of arts education projects. Included here are examples of recent recipients who have shared their projects with us. 2012- Arlington Elementary School - Fort Wayne, IN
With the funding provided by a 2012 Arts in Education grant from the IAC, Arlington Elementary School in Fort Wayne brought two art opportunities to their students – the FAME Visiting Artist program and their 4th annual Fine Arts Day.
In March 2012, famed illustrator, artist, and art educator Mark Kistler of PBS’ Imagination Station visited Arlington to discuss character, respect, and his artistic techniques with the students. “Classroom teachers took what he taught in the assemblies and expanded on these important topics in their classroom,” art teacher Janet Corah said. “His lessons in three dimensional drawing excited, educated and motivated our students to create their own creations.”
Then in May, Arlington hosted their 4th annual Fine Arts Day. Students explored a range of artistic forms including Native American dance with the Fort Wayne Ballet, rhythm and African drumming with Dumpster Drummers and Abass Camara, storytelling through movement with drama teacher Elizabeth Piercy, illustration with artist, illustrator, and children's author Adam Seif, and the artistic and scientific process of John James Audubon with the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.
“FAME Visiting Artists and Fine Arts Day have been wonderful experiences for our students and we hope to continue both opportunities for our students for many years,” Corah said.
2012 - Bunche Montessori Early Childhood Center - Fort Wayne, INIn conjunction with the Fort Wayne Dance Collective, Bunche Montessori Early Childhood Center in Fort Wayne used their Arts In Education grant to enhance the students' study of the culture of Australia. Instructors from the Dance Collective met with Bunche teachers to develop the curriculum for the children. "Not only did the children learn a lot through the connections the instructors from the Dance Collective helped them make," Marilyn Horan, Principal at Bunche Montessori, said, "but they also had a fabulous time doing it!"The project culminated in a spring performance for the students families.
"Providing communities with the vehicle to connect exceptional resources with children who otherwise would not have opportunities to participate in these activities will enrich their lives and their families for years to come," Horan said.
2012 - Good Shepherd Montessori School - South Bend, INStudents at Good Shepherd Montessori School in South Bend were able to complete a series of art projects surrounding the creation and dedication of an 800-pound bird of peace sculpture in their community through an Arts In Education Grant. Students went on a fieldtrip to Fernwood Gardens to make model birds with which they decorated the school, as well as creating drawings and poems. A local sculptor worked with junior high students to form the large bird sculpture of metal, wood, foam and mud.
Children delivered invitations to 250 neighbors and businesses in the area for the dedication of the bird sculpture. The community sung peace songs, played games and picnicked near the sculpture, which children and adults alike inaugurated by blowing thousands of bubbles.
“We are so grateful for the gift of this grant in making this sculpture come true. It means so much to our school community, and now to our town,” Felicia Leon-Driscoll, director of community relations at Montessori, said.
2012 - Norwell Middle School - Ossian, INNorwell Middle School completed its first Art and Music Festival as a result of its grant from the Indiana Arts Commission. The grant funding allowed the school to partner with Wells County Master Gardeners and create two sculpture gardens which included murals of paintings by Indiana artist T.C. Steele, metal sculptures of Indiana native plants and animals and Indiana-themed mosaic stepping stones.
The school was able to hire a string quartet from the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and dancers from the Wells County Creative Arts Council’s School of Ballet to perform at the Arts and Music Festival which celebrated the gardens’ unveiling. A ceramicist, sidewalk chalk artist and chainsaw sculpture visited to teach the students about their respective art forms. Parent volunteers and community members also enjoyed the festival with students.
“It was a huge success, and a great way to promote the arts in Indiana,” art teacher at Norwell Hallie Koenig said. “Thanks for all you do.”
2011 - Greater Clark County Schools - Jeffersonville, INThe Arts In Education grant at Greater Clark School Corporation in Jeffersonville allowed elementary students to experience Shakespeare’s legendary plays. The school focused on a program that lined up with the Common Core Standards in the corporation. Greater Clark hired a daylong artist-in-residence to work with its higher ability students. Students had access to material often reserved for older children, and their eyes were opened to their potential. Educator-performers helped students produce their own plays, complete with costumes.
“When elementary students ask their teachers to bring them more Shakespeare plays to take home and read on their own, then a love of literature has been born,” Susan Stewart of the Advanced Program at Greater Clark, said. “Thank you, IAC.”
2010 - Batesville Middle School - Batesville, IN

2010 - Dickinson Fine Arts Academy - South Bend, IN
Dickinson Fine Arts Academy in South Bend, IN used its Arts in Education grant to create a combined math and art project using the geometric block designs in quilts. The school partnered with River Bend Community Math Center to produce lessons in design and fractions. Teachers spent two days in professional development and taught alongside staff members from River Bend. Students used fractions and geometry to create block patterns which were incorporated into a large mural.
“The mural will be displayed in the school and will be used for interactive math activities,” Kemilyn Schreiber, fine arts magnet facilitator at Dickinson Intermediate Fine Arts Academy, said.
