Human trafficking is a $32 billion global industry driven by trafficking profit. It is the fastest growing and second largest criminal activity in the world, just behind the drug trade. According to the Trafficking in Persons Report produced by the State Department, approximately 27 million men, women and children are victims of some form of human trafficking. The average age at which girls in the United States first become victims of prostitution is 12-14.
With this in mind, Attorneys General from across the country joined forces to combat this growing problem as the key initiative for the National Association of Attorneys General. Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller serves as a member of the Leadership Council and developed a model awareness initiative for all states to use, dubbed "Don't Buy the Lie" that purchasing sex is a victimless crime.
As part of the "Don't Buy the Lie" campaign, Zoeller, co-chair of the Indiana Protection of Abused and Trafficked Humans task force, created a public pledge to promote zero tolerance for the sex industry and supported legislative changes that make it easier to prosecute and hold traffickers accountable.
The campaign also includes a PowerPoint, video and information card that can be used for training.
Take the pledge. If you are interested in obtaining hard copies of the "Don't Buy the Lie" card, please email nicole.baldonado@atg.in.gov
