Proof of financial responsibility must be submitted electronically in the form of a Certificate of Compliance (COC) by the driver’s or vehicle owner’s insurance provider following:
When a driver’s driving privileges are suspended for operating a motor vehicle without, or failing to provide proof of, financial responsibility or after being convicted of certain major offenses, such as operating while intoxicated or leaving the scene of an accident, the driver must have his or her insurance provider electronically submit a SR22 (Proof of Future Financial Responsibility) form to the BMV before his or her driving privileges can be reinstated. The BMV will notify the driver when a SR22 form must be filed.
A valid SR22 form must be maintained with the BMV for a period of three years following the end of the suspension for operating without, or failing to provide proof of, financial responsibility. If the BMV receives an insurance cancellation notice or does not have a current SR22 on file at any time during the three-year period after reinstatement, the motorist’s driving privileges will again be suspended.
The self-insurance administrator at companies/organizations, with a current BMV-issued Certificate of Self-Insurance, must utilize the EIFS program to submit appropriate proof of financial responsibility.
