A motorcycle learner's permit allows Indiana residents who hold a valid Indiana driver's license to practice riding a motorcycle or motor driven cycle before applying for a motorcycle endorsement.

You may apply for a motorcycle learner’s permit at any Indiana BMV license branch. You must meet the following requirements to obtain a motorcycle learner’s permit.

You should arrive at the license branch at least one hour before the close of business in order to take the knowledge test that day.

Documents of identification

When you visit a license branch to apply for a motorcycle learner's permit you must present documents of identification proving your identity, residency status and Social Security number; or, a valid Indiana credential.

Agreement of financial liability

If you are less than 18 years of age when you apply for a motorcycle learner's permit, you must have a parent or guardian sign an agreement of financial liability

Riding with a Motorcycle Learner's Permit

If you hold a motorcycle learner's permit you may practice driving a motorcycle or motor driven cycle. You must wear a helmet when you ride, you may only ride during daylight hours, and you may not carry passengers.

How long is my motorcycle learner's permit valid?

A motorcycle learner's permit is valid for one year. If your motorcycle learner's permit expires it is no longer valid and you must apply for a new permit by taking the knowledge test and vision screening again, and presenting your documents of identification if applicable. Passing a new skills test also may be required.

A motorcycle learner’s permit may be renewed one time for a period of one year. If you do not obtain a motorcycle endorsement before the expiration of the renewed permit, you must wait one year to reapply for a new motorcycle learner’s permit.

How do I replace my motorcycle learner's permit?

To replace your motorcycle learner's permit you will need to visit a license branch and present certain documents of identification.

Obtaining a Motorcycle Endorsement with a Motorcycle Learner's Permit

To add a motorcycle endorsement to your valid Indiana driver's license, you must hold a motorcycle learner's permit and pass a motorcycle riding skills test or complete an approved Motorcycle Operator Safety Education Program. When you visit a license branch to apply for your motorcycle endorsement, you must provide proof that you have passed a motorcycle skills test or safety course, and pass a standard vision screening test. You must also present certain documents of identification if applicable.
