Motorcycle learner's permits are provided to Indiana residents who would like to add a motorcycle endorsement to their valid Indiana driver's license. To get a motorcycle learner's permit you need to visit a license branch and pass a standard vision screening test and a knowledge examination based on the Motorcycle Operator's Manual.
You should arrive at the license branch at least one hour before the close of business in order to take the knowledge examination that day.
When you visit a license branch to apply for a motorcycle learner's permit you must present documents of identification proving your identity, residency status and Social Security number.
If you are less than 18 years of age when you apply for a motorcycle learner's permit, you must have a parent or guardian sign an agreement of financial liability
If you hold a learner's permit you must wear a helmet when you ride, you may only ride during daylight hours, and you may not carry passengers.
A motorcycle learner's permit is valid for one year. If your motorcycle learner's permit expires it is no longer valid and you must apply for a new permit by taking the knowledge examination and vision screening test again, and presenting your documents of identification. Passing a new skills test also may be required.
A motorcycle learner’s permit may be renewed one time for a period of one year. If you do not obtain a motorcycle endorsement before the expiration of the renewed permit, you must wait one year to reapply for a new motorcycle learner’s permit.
To replace your motorcycle learner's permit you will need to visit a license branch and present certain documents of identification.
To add a motorcycle endorsement to your valid Indiana driver's license, you must hold a motorcycle learner's permit and pass a motorcycle skills test or complete an approved motorcycle safety course. When you visit a license branch to apply for your motorcycle endorsement, you must provide proof that you have passed a motorcycle skills test or safety course, and pass a standard vision screening test.
