A motorcycle learner's permit allows Indiana residents who hold a valid Indiana driver's license to practice riding a motorcycle or motor driven cycle before applying for a motorcycle endorsement.
You may apply for a motorcycle learner’s permit at any Indiana BMV license branch if you meet the following requirements:
You must arrive at the license branch at least one hour before the close of business in order to take the motorcycle knowledge test that day.
When you visit a license branch to apply for a motorcycle learner's permit and you don’t already have an Indiana driver’s license, you must present documents of identification proving your identity, Indiana residency, lawful status and Social Security number.
If you are less than 18 years of age when you apply for a motorcycle learner's permit, you must have a parent or guardian sign an Agreement of Financial Liability.
If you hold a motorcycle learner's permit, you may practice driving a motorcycle or motor driven cycle. You must wear a United States Department of Transportation-approved helmet when you ride, you may only ride during daylight hours, and you may not carry passengers.
A motorcycle learner's permit is valid for one year. If your motorcycle learner's permit expires it is no longer valid and you must apply for a new permit by taking the motorcycle knowledge test again, and presenting your documents of identification if applicable. An individual who does not obtain a motorcycle operator endorsement before the expiration of the renewed learner’s permit must wait one year to reapply for a new motorcycle learner’s permit. Passing a new skills test may also be required.
A motorcycle learner’s permit may be renewed one time for a period of one year. If you do not obtain a motorcycle endorsement before the expiration of the renewed permit, you must wait one year to reapply for a new motorcycle learner’s permit.
To replace your motorcycle learner's permit you will need to visit a license branch. You must present your driver’s license or verify your personal information when applying.
To add a motorcycle endorsement to your Indiana driver’s license, you must provide proof you have successfully completed a BMV-authorized Motorcycle Operator Safely Education Course OR have passed a motorcycle knowledge test based on the Indiana Motorcycle Operator's Manual, and passed a motorcycle riding skills test. You may also be required to pass a standard vision screening test.
