The BMV is currently not accepting applications for new Personalized License Plates as questions regarding the program are before the Indiana Supreme Court. The Court heard arguments on August 27 and the agency is awaiting their determination. Though no timeline for the Court’s final decision has been established, the BMV hopes to have additional information as soon as possible. A personalized license plate allows you to customize the alpha numeric sequence on your plate. You may reserve a personalized license plate for passenger automobiles, motorcycles, RVs or trucks (11, 000 lbs or less). Please note the following costs and guidelines for personalized license plates before making your purchase.
In addition to your standard registration fees, a personalized license plate fee of $45 is required. If you are ordering a personalized specialty plate, you will still be required to pay the applicable special group recognition and administration fees.
Personalized license plates cannot include punctuation. The maximum number of characters per plate are:
Individuals requesting a new or existing personalized license plate are not required to reserve the plate in advance.
New personalized license plates can be ordered during the registration transaction through myBMV.com, at license branches, and other customer service locations. You will receive the plate in the mail within 14 days.
Personalized license plate renewals may be processed through myBMV.com, by mail, by phone (888-692-6841) using the phone access code number listed on the renewal form, at license branches, and other customer service locations. You will receive the plate in the mail within 14 days.
According to IC 9-18-15-4(b), the BMV may refuse to issue a personalized plate if the content is misleading or offensive to good taste and decency. If your request is denied, the BMV will contact you to revise your request or appeal the decision.
Your plate should have stickers showing the day, month, and year of your next registration renewal, and the county in which your vehicle is registered. Indiana law prohibits license plate frames or covers that obscure stickers, text, or numbers on your plate.
