MyBMV is an enhanced online service of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (“BMV”), designed to be a virtual license branch for customers to complete select BMV transactions, many of which were never before offered online and obtain other helpful information from the convenience of their homes, offices, or other convenient locations. Anyone can access detailed information and instructions they need about BMV services. And anyone with an Indiana driver’s license or identification card number and Social Security Number may follow a few easy steps to establish an individual account through myBMV.
One of Governor Daniels’ top priorities for the BMV is to improve customer service through greater convenience. Through the “Customer Choices” initiative launched in 2007, BMV services are now available at approximately 150 non-branch locations throughout the state. In addition, a $5 discount is applied to any registration renewal conducted online. As of May 8, 2008, more than 633,000 customers have taken advantage of the discount, resulting in customer savings of nearly $3.2 million. MyBMV is the next generation of this initiative, making select branch transactions and more information available virtually anywhere.
Like other Customer Choice options, myBMV will not only offer greater convenience and improved customer service to Hoosiers who choose to use it; it will improve traditional services as well, by reducing the volume of customers visiting our license branches or contacting the BMV call center.
What types of transactions may customers conduct by setting up an individual myBMV account?
MyBMV is divided into four distinct customer areas: My Registrations, My Titles, My Driver Record and My Information. There are a variety of transactions that can be conducted under each section (detailed below). Annually, approximately 6.8 million such transactions are conducted by the BMV.

Will other services, especially driver’s license renewals, ever be available through myBMV?
The BMV is committed to expanding the range of services available and plans to increase the functionality of myBMV quarterly throughout 2008. For example, in the coming months, customers will be able to trade their existing license plate for a different plate design and to research the specific requirements that they need to meet in order to have their licenses reinstated.
Although it is the single most-requested online service, the BMV does not currently have the statutory authority to renew driver licenses online. The BMV sought the authority to offer this popular service in the 2008 Legislative Session and will continue to seek approval in future sessions of the Indiana General Assembly.
Are there fees associated with creating a myBMV account?
There is no charge to create a myBMV account or to view customer information online. For those transactions that require fees, such as purchasing an official driver record, the fees are the same as those charged in BMV license branches. Continuing the online discount program announced late last year, customers renewing vehicle registrations through myBMV will receive a $5 discount over the in-branch fee.
VISA and MasterCard are accepted forms of payment on myBMV.
Safeguarding personal information is one of the BMV’s most important responsibilities and the myBMV interface ensures that customer data is confidential and secure. The BMV uses secure sockets layer (SSL) technology to protect data transmissions. SSL is used by thousands of internet services, financial institutions and e-commerce outlets to ensure all data is authenticated and thoroughly encrypted. MyBMV is certified by Verisign, the leader in SSL security and validating the protection of consumer data.
What other information is available on myBMV?
You can obtain information ranging from hours and locations of license branches to downloading an application for a handicapped placard for an elderly parent. A list of everything you need before visiting a license branch can be found on myBMV. And if you’re trying to avoid a branch visit altogether, with a few exceptions, you can find the answer at myBMV.
What are the hours of availability?
MyBMV will be closed for scheduled maintenance from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings. This virtual branch will be open at all other times, including after normal license branch hours and on holidays.
Which license plates are not eligible for the $5 online discount?
Most Indiana license plates may now be renewed online, including the most popular specialty license plates. Please note that customers may only renew plates which they already have. If you would like to switch your license plate to another type you will need to visit a license branch.
The following registrations cannot be renewed online and therefore are not eligible for the online discount offer:
Plate Authorization Form Required
At the request of the sponsoring organization, the following specialty plates require an authorization letter from the organization before the plate can be issued:
Specialized Vehicles
Additional documents must be filed with the registration renewal applications for the following vehicles:
Other plate programs
Additional documents must be presented at a license branch to renew the antique vehicle license plate and the low-numbered license plate.
What is the online discount program?
The online discount program is an initiative through which the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) will offer customers a $5 discount for each vehicle registration completed through the BMV’s Web site, between January 1, 2008, and October 31, 2008.
Why is the BMV offering this incentive?
Vehicle registration transactions completed online are the least costly registration transactions for the BMV, costing even less than the same transactions completed by mail. Through this discount program, the BMV expects to drive additional traffic to this low-cost method, while sharing the savings with our customers.
Why did the BMV choose this discount over some other incentive?
Earlier this year, the BMV conducted customer research to ask license branch customers what might motivate them to complete their registration transactions online. A cash discount, in the $5 range, was the most preferred option.
Vehicle registrations make up about 64% of all of the BMV’s transaction volume. Only about 6% of those registration transactions were completed online in 2007. Although it is difficult to anticipate, the BMV projects that this volume could as much as double in 2008 as a result of this program. Through February, 2008, 25% of all registration renewals statewide had been conducted online.
How do customers complete transactions online?
Customers may renew their vehicle registrations online by creating a myBMV personal account.
Which vehicles are eligible to receive a discount?
Customers will receive a $5 discount for each vehicle that is eligible to be renewed online. Certain vehicles are ineligible for online renewal, including vehicles requiring an authorization form from a specialty group, heavy-weighted vehicles requiring a motor fuel tax form, and others.
How will the BMV fund this discount program?
Recognizing the long-term benefits of this program and taking advantage of recent savings resulting from operational efficiencies, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles Commission has approved the use of Bureau of Motor Vehicles Commission Fund dollars to support this initiative.
How long will it take to receive my registration once I complete the online transaction?
Through much of 2007, registration renewals completed online were processed and placed in the mail within one to two business days. With a projected growth in volume, a reasonable expectation is 7-10 business days. For customers who have moved and have not yet updated an address with the BMV, the process may take longer for mail to be forwarded to current address.
