Indiana Entry Health Requirements
The following is a summary of Indiana's animal health laws governing the transportation of swine into Indiana. The transportation laws may be found at 345 IAC 1-3. Certificate of Veterinary Inspection:
Required. Must be completed by a licensed and accredited veterinarian within the thirty (30) days immediately prior to the animal entering Indiana.
But, a certificate of veterinary inspection is not required for animals that are consigned for immediate slaughter or that are delivered directly to a slaughter establishment.
Entry Permit:
Required. A permit to transport swine into Indiana must be obtained prior to transporting swine into Indiana. Permits may be obtained during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, by calling (877) 747-3038. After hours, fax the CVI and cover sheet to 317/974-2011 and it will be processed during business horus. Note: A fax must possess a return fax number.
Testing:
No animal that has tested positive for Pseudorabies may enter Indiana. No animal that originates from a herd that is quarantined for Pseudorabies may enter Indiana.
Brucellosis test. Breeding animals must test negative for Brucellosis within the thirty (30) days immediately prior to entering Indiana. Each animal transported into Indiana will be isolated from other animals and retested for Brucellosis between thirty (30) and forty-five (45) days after entry. But, the following animals do not need a Brucellosis test prior to entry or a retest after entry:
- Swine under one hundred eighty (180) days of age.
- Swine that originate from a herd that is validated Brucellosis-free under the national Brucellosis eradication program.
- Swine that originate from a state that is classified as Brucellosis-free by the United States Department of Agriculture. But feral swine are not exempt.
Pseudorabies test. Breeding animals must test negative for Pseudorabies within the thirty (30) days immediately prior to entering Indiana. Each animal transported into Indiana will be isolated from other animals and retested for Pseudorabies between thirty (30) and forty-five (45) days after entry. But, the following animals do not need a Pseudorabies test prior to entry or a retest after entry:
- Swine that originate from a herd that is qualified Pseudorabies-free under the national Pseudorabies eradication program.
- Swine that originate from an area that is designated Stage IV or Stage V under the national Pseudorabies eradication program. But feral swine are not exempt.
Swine vaccinated for Pseudorabies may not enter Indiana.
Feeder swine and slaughter swine. Swine transported into Indiana directly to a slaughter establishment or to a slaughter only market are exempt from all testing requirements.
Swine transported into Indiana for feeding are quarantined to the destination premises and must be tested for Pseudorabies as provided by the Board of Animal Health rules. Contact the swine division for more information.
Vaccination: None.
Identification: Each pig must have individual identification. Registered purebred swine can move on their ear notch. Crossbred swine must have an approved state/federal tag. Feeder and weaner/SEW swine can move on the official state/federal tattoo or official state/federal tag.
