The following is a summary of Indiana's animal health laws governing the transportation of domestic animals into Indiana. The transportation laws may be found at 345 IAC 1-3. The following requirements apply to the transportation of domestic animals into Indiana.

IC 15-2.1-2-15 "Domestic animal" means an animal that is not wild. The term is limited to:

  1. cattle, calves, horses, mules, swine, sheep, goats, dogs, cats, poultry, ostriches, rhea, emus, or other bird;
  2. an animal of the bovine, equine, ovine, caprine, porcine, canine, feline, avian, camelid, cervidae, or bison species; or
  3. an aquatic animal that may be the subject of aquaculture (as defined in IC 4?4?3.8?1).

The following species have more specific requirements for transportation into Indiana that may be found under their own title on this web site:

Certificate of Veterinary Inspection:
Required. Must be completed by a licensed and accredited veterinarian within the thirty (30) days immediately prior to the animal entering Indiana.

Entry Permit:
Not generally required. But, see information for swine, cattle, bison, cervids, and camelids and dogs, cats, and ferrets for permit requirements for those species.

No animal that has tested positive for Tuberculosis, Brucellosis, Chronic, Wasting Disease, Rabies or any other infectious or contagious disease may enter Indiana. No animal that originates from a herd that is quarantined for a contagious or infectious disease may enter Indiana.

Other Requirements:
Individual animal identification required.

Certain exotic and normally wild animals may require additional permits from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to locate in Indiana.
