Important Information for Horse Owners
Indiana's Premise Registration program is voluntary for horse and poultry owners. Hoosiers owning any other types of livestock including: cattle, bison, swine, sheep, goats, deer or elk, must register their premises by September 1, 2006. Currently, Indiana horse owners have registered more than 1100 premises! The Indiana State Board of Animal Health encourages horse owners to take a proactive approach to Biosecurity. By registering, horse owners improve the lines of communication and take a huge step in protecting their animals from potentially devastating diseases like equine herpes virus.
Many people have heard rumors that BOAH will require horse owners to report every movement of their horses. That statement is completely false. Hoosier horse owners are free to travel with their horses as they wish. BOAH officials do not have the resources nor the desire to track every movement of Indiana's 160,000 horses. Indiana's only equine requirements include a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection with a negative Coggins test for horses entering the state. Although many shows or trail rides might require specific documents, BOAH has no requirements regarding horses residing in the state of Indiana.
The United States Department of Agriculture's National Animal Identification System Equine Industry Working Group has worked diligently to develop recommendations to benefit the equine industry most effectively.
