Indiana Point Of Youth: Creating Advocates for Safe Communities is a youth advisory group to the State's decision-makers on substance abuse and public safety issues. Much like the Commission and Council's adult Steering Committees, this group of young people from around the state advises the Governor and General Assembly on substance abuse and public safety issues. They are developing an action plan to implement in their own communities and serve as a link between State policy-makers and the youth whose lives are directly impacted by policies surrounding substance abuse and public safety.
Indiana Point of Youth was founded in 1998. Planning for this organization began before that. The idea came about after two successful Youth Summits, which were sponsored by the Governor's Commission For A Drug-Free Indiana. It was decided that youth could and should take an active role in alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention activities. They also took strides for public safety, by involving the Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving.
