DESCRIPTION

Possession of the land which comprises Deer Creek Fish & Wildlife Area began in 2010 with a transfer of 1,962 acres from the Putnamville Correctional Facility to the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Fish & Wildlife. The property is comprised of rolling interspersed agriculture and mature oak hickory dominated woods. A four-acre pond is located on the north portion  that offers fishing for bass, bluegill and catfish. Deer Creek winds through the south portion of the property and is associated with one low head dam, iron bridge and a concrete creek crossing. A smaller unnamed creek crosses the north portion of the property.

ACTIVITIES

Fishing

  • Deer Creek Fish & Wildlife Area provides fishing on a 4-acre pond located on the north portion of the property, and in Deer Creek which runs through the southern portion.
  • Check-in is required for fishing. Daylight hours only; no night fishing.
  • Primary species include catfish, crappie, bluegill, redear and largemouth bass.
  • There are no boat ramps located on the property.
  • Only electric trolling motors are allowed.
  • Shoreline fishing is allowed. There is a 14 inch minimum size limit for largemouth bass on all small impoundments and 12 inch minimum size limit on Deer Creek. All other size and bag limits apply.

Hunting

  • Deer, quail, rabbit, squirrel, dove, woodcock, waterfowl and wild turkey are available at Deer Creek Fish & Wildlife Area.
  • Deer hunting-2015/16 Season
    • Archery: Permitted daily by self-service check-in from Oct. 1-Nov. 13; Nov. 30-Dec. 4; and Dec. 21-Jan. 3. If a hunter is selected for a reserve draw hunt during firearms and muzzleloader, it is permissible to use archery equipment during their hunt.
    • Firearm: During firearm season all deer hunting opportunities will be permitted by pre-season draw only. Hunt dates during firearm season are: Nov. 14-15, 17-18, 24-25 and 28-29. To register for a reserve draw, go to dnr.IN.gov/fishwild/5834.htm. Applications will be accepted July 1 through Aug. 7, 2015. A successfully drawn hunter may bring one hunting partner.
    • Muzzleloader: During muzzleloader season all deer hunting opportunities will be by permitted by pre-season draw only. Hunt dates during muzzleloader are: Dec. 5-6, 8-9, 12-13, 15-16 and 19-20. To register for a reserve hunt, go to dnr.IN.gov/fishwild/5834.htm. Applications will be accepted July 1 through Aug. 7, 2015. A successfully drawn hunter may bring one hunting partner.
    • Bonus antlerless tags are not permitted and there will be no deer hunting during the special antlerless season.
  • Squirrel and woodcock are permitted daily during seasons by self service check-in.
  • Quail and rabbit: Saturday hunts during season from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. permitted by pre-season drawing only. To register for a pre-season draw, go to dnr.IN.gov/fishwild/5834.htm. A successfully drawn hunter can bring one hunting partner. Non-toxic shot only.
  • Turkey hunting
    • Spring season: During the first six days of spring season, there will be three, two-day hunts allocated by pre-season draw. To register for a pre-season draw, go to dnr.IN.gov/fishwild/5834.htm. A successfully drawn hunter can bring one non-hunting partner. After the first six days, hunting will be permitted daily by self-service check-in for the remainder of the season.
    • Fall season: Hunting is permitted daily by self-service check-in. Fall turkey hunting is restricted to archery only. Fall archery turkey hunting is not permitted during deer muzzleloader season
  • Waterfowl: Waterfowl hunting is permitted by self-service check-in during waterfowl season.
  • Dove: Dove hunting is permitted by self-service check-in during dove season. Hunting hours are from 8 a.m. until noon on the first three days of the season. After the first three days, hunting hours are ½ hr before sunrise until sunset. Non-toxic shot only.
  • Snipe, rail and coot hunting is not allowed
  • Night hunting is not allowed
  • Trapping: Trapping is permitted by self-service check-in. Trapping activities are permitted during daylight hours only. Upland trapping is allowed Dec. 31 through March 15. Upland trapping is restricted to the use of dog-proof traps or trap sizes smaller than 1.75. All other traps must be completely covered by water.
  • Non-toxic shot will be required for all upland game and waterfowl hunting.
  • Trapping is self serve. Call property for details.
  • Furbearers: Furbearer hunting is permitted by self-service check-in during furbearer season. Daylight hours only; no night hunting.

Target Shooting

  • No target shooting is allowed.

Wildlife Watching

  • 2,175 acres of upland and forested habitat, shallow impoundments and Deer Creek attract songbirds, woodpeckers, red-tailed hawks, turkeys and deer.

Additional Opportunities

  • Wild berries, nuts and spring and fall mushrooms may be gathered from the property.
  • Mushroom hunters may not enter the field until noon local time during spring turkey season.
  • Hunting areas and fishing accessible to persons with disabilities are available. Ask for details.

RULES

In addition to state fish and wildlife laws, this property is governed by posted regulations affecting the public use of lands and facilities owned, leased or licensed by the Department of Natural Resources. The property is open to public access 7 days a week during daylight hours only. Nighttime property use is not permitted.

Neighboring Land

  • Please keep in mind the Putnamville Correctional Facility adjoins Deer Creek Fish & Wildlife Area. Trespassing on Putnamville Correctional Facility will not be tolerated by the Department of Corrections.

Posted Areas

  • Safety zones, refuges, waterfowl resting and other restricted areas are marked with appropriate signs. PLEASE READ AND OBEY ALL SIGNS.

Violations

  • Violation of any law, rule or regulation governing this property may be cause for forfeiting your hunting, fishing, or visiting privileges on this area.

Responsibility

  • The Division of Fish & Wildlife, Department of Natural Resources, will not be held responsible for any accidents or deaths occurring from the use of these facilities.

Permits In addition to a hunting and/or fishing license the following permits are required:

  • Permission to hunt on Deer Creek Fish & Wildlife Area must be obtained before entering the field. Daily hunt permit cards must be in possession of the hunter and recorded through established self-service procedures outlined at the check station. Self-service drop boxes are located on the property for your convenience.
  • Collecting Permits are required from the property manager or DNR for the collection of anything except nuts, berries and mushrooms.

Traffic

  • Traffic on public roads through the area is governed by state and county laws. All other roads are limited to foot traffic only.
