May is National Historic Preservation Month and the DNR Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology celebrates Indiana’s historic places every year in a variety of ways. Take a look and find something that appeals to you.
Grab a camera and getting shooting. The annual deadline is the first Friday of April. Photos are judged by a panel of DNR staff in the categories of best overall photo, best overall resource, and most artistic photo.
To bring the photo contest closer to home, the DHPA partners with local organizations and groups to sponsor photo exhibits during May. This way we bring the some of the photo contest submissions closer to you.
The DHPA creates a poster every year to commemorate Historic Preservation Month. These are available in late April. To request a complimentary poster, call (317) 232-1647 or email aborland@dnr.IN.gov. Quantities are limited.
Building of the Day
Curious about what DHPA's staff considers some of Indiana’s architectural jewels? Follow the DHPA on Facebook for our Building of the Day posts in May. Each day of the month we will reveal a different building that the DHPA staff chose as one of their favorites.
4th Grade Essay Contest—My Favorite Historic Place in Indiana
In Indiana, 4th grade history is devoted to Indiana history. The DHPA sponsors an essay contest for 4th grade students to tell us all about their favorite historic place in Indiana. Essays are judged by volunteers based on quality of writing, content and theme, and originality of thought. See rules to enter.
Calendar of Events
A variety of preservation events happen throughout Indiana during May. Check out the DHPA’s calendar of events to find out what’s going on near you. If you want to add an event to our calendar, send details to assistants@dnr.IN.gov.
