Lake Michigan Coastal Program Grants

The Indiana DNR Lake Michigan Coastal Program receives an annual allotment of funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to administer a grants program to carry out projects which protect and restore natural, cultural and historic resources in Indiana's Lake Michigan coastal region.  The Lake Michigan Coastal Grants Program is an annual competitive grants program that awards funds to units of local government, regional and state agencies, colleges and universities, as well as to non-profit organizations. The program's funds may be expended on six different categories of projects, including public access or habitat improvements, land acquisition, planning and coordination, education and outreach, applied research, and emerging issues.  Projects must be located entirely within the Lake Michigan Coastal area, the northern portions of Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties. Since 2001, the Coastal Grants Program has funded more than $12 million in projects.

Basic Information about LMCP Grants

Approximately $600,000 of funding is available to local entities for projects meeting the program criteria for the 2017 grant cycle. Federal appropriations for the 2017 grant cycle are not yet set; as such, all projects that receive state approval will be considered conditionally approved. If Federal Appropriations for 2017 are less than for 2016, projects may receive a prorated award amount reflecting the difference in funding shortfall. The DNR Lake Michigan Coastal Program administers the Indiana Coastal Grants Program. The Indiana Coastal Grants Program is comprised of two components: (1) Large Scale Grant Program; and (2) Small Scale Grant Program.

2017 Funding Cycle - Large Grants

The Mission of the Lake Michigan Coastal Program is to protect and enhance coastal resources by providing technical and financial assistance and coordination to current and future partners.

The Coastal Grants program provides grants technical assistance, as well as funding to communities and organizations that seek out social, economic, and environmental solutions that promote partnerships and balance the use and protection of the coast’s valuable, yet fragile, resources.

If you think your agency or organization may be interested in applying, please read the “2017 Coastal Grant Pre-Proposal Guidance” (link below) to see if your organization and your project qualify for this program.  Several  LMCP Grant Workshops will be scheduled in July and August of 2016, to walk potential applicants through the grant program process.  Those dates have not yet been determined.  Keep checking back here for updates.

2017 Pre-proposals are due on Friday, Sept. 16, 2016 by 5 p.m. Central time.

Information about Past Coastal Grants

The map below displays a sample of Lake Michigan Coastal Grants between the years 2003 and 2010 ranging from Low Cost Construction to Education/Outreach project types. While numerous grants are awarded each year, it's helpful to have a visual connection with the project locations and types in the coastal region.

The map will be updated as additional grant projects are identified. To learn more about a report location, zoom in or out by using the menu in the upper left corner. Click on the project dot to see attributes as well access to each fact sheet.

Funding Referral Service

The Lake Michigan Coastal Grants Program can offer approximately $600,000 per year in pass-through grant funding. Annually, we receive at least $1 million in requests, which means that many great projects have to be turned away. In order to help our grant applicants and partners find alternate sources of funding for the projects we are unable to fund, we have developed a suite of services which we are calling our “Funding Referral Service.”

Suite of Services
1. Funding Source Matrix
2. Grant Programs Timelines (coming in 2017)
3. Government Grant Capacity Building Workshops  (coming in 2017)

The LMCP Grant Specialist currently offers technical assistance to help funding-seekers identify appropriate grant programs for their projects, review proposals for other grant programs and offer suggestions for improvement. These proposed projects, however, must be in line with the mission and goals of the Lake Michigan Coastal Program.
