What to expect at ICO Recruit School
Click here for information about the 2011 ICO Recruit School.
Indiana Conservation Officer (ICO) Recruit School is a para-military type academy that is designed to push the recruit to his or her limits. The recruit school demands one’s very best both physically and mentally. It is a maximum performance environment. ICO Recruit School candidates participate in a very rigorous physical fitness training program. This training is to teach the recruit that giving up is not an option when working alone in an outdoor environment.
During recruit school in addition to physical training, recruits learn military drill, case management, watercraft patrol and enforcement, fish and wildlife law and are introduced to firearms training, defensive tactics and vehicle operation. All this training leads a recruit to the field training period allowing the recruit to observe and perform the day to day duties of ICO’s. Recruits are evaluated daily during this training and must complete an Field Training Officers manual and receive a passing grade prior to being released to patrol status. Recruits will be assigned in location based on operational needs. Within one year of employment all recruits will attend the 15 week Basic class held at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield.
ICO Recruit School is not for everyone. But if you have a strong commitment to protecting the natural resources and the citizens of the state of Indiana and meet the minimum requirements, we encourage you to enter your e-mail address for notifications of upcoming hiring examinations.
