Why do I have to register my vehicle?
Indiana law IC 14-16-1 states that all ORVs purchased after December 31, 2003 must be registered. Snowmobiles and ORVs must be registered to be ridden on state trails and other public property.
Can I register my golf cart?
No. IC 14-8-2-185 clearly states that golf carts are NOT off road vehicles and can not be registered through the DNR as one.
What if I modify my golf car to make it off-road capable?
No, it was still designed as a golf cart.
I'm not a resident of Indiana, what do I do?
IC 14-16-1-19 allows out of state residents to use another states registration. This allows visitors to use our facilities for up to 20 days a year.
Indiana residents must have an Indiana registration. If you do not, you face fines. Out of state residents are welcome to register their OHV through the IN DNR.
How much does it cost to register my vehicle?
The current cost is $30.00 for 3 years.
Where can I obtain a registration application form?
Applications are available from most dealers; most license branches, DNR Customer Service Center, or you may print your own by scrolling to the bottom of this page.
How do I register my vehicle?
Applications are NOT taken by fax or over the phone. We need an original signature for all new registrations
A bill of sale is required for all OHVs purchased (new or used) after December 31, 2003. The bill of sale must include date of purchase, the make, model, and vehicle number of the vehicle. (see IC 14-16-1-8) You can mail registrations and renewals, or do it in person at the DNR Customer Service Center in Indianapolis.
A new online renewal registration system is available online at Online Snowmobile/ORV registration. It will be for renewals only and allows you to print an interim registration that you can use while waiting for your stickers in the mail. You will need the VIN number of the vehicle and the current (or most recent) registration number to access the system. Other registrations will still have to be sent in by mail or done in person in Indianapolis.
How long will it take for me to get my registration?
Your registration will normally be processed a few days after receipt if all of the information is correct. If your registration is not correct or blanks are left on the form, it will be sent back to you for corrections. DNR staff is not responsible for filling out your form for you, if you do not completely fill out the form, it will be returned. After processing, your completed registration will be mailed to you the next day. Please plan accordingly and allow time for processing and mailing of your registration. If you have not received you registration after 10 business days, call the customer service center.
When will I be legal to ride my vehicle?
When you receive your registration in the mail and your stickers are properly displayed on your vehicle or when you or your dealer have printed your interim registration.
How can I legally ride the vehicle I just purchased?
Keep a copy of your bill of sale with you. It allows you to operate your vehicle for 31 days after the bill of sale. The bill of sale must include date of purchase, the make, model, and vehicle number of the vehicle. (see IC 14-16-1-8) This gives you plenty of time to send in and receive the proper registration.
If I carry a copy of my registration or renewal application and check, will this be legal until I receive my registration?
No.
The dealer from which I purchased my vehicle has a dealer registration; can I use this until I receive my registration?
No. These registrations are for a dealer or manufacturer to use for testing or demonstration purposes only. These registrations are not for recreational use.
What about the large numbers we had to have on our machines?
The 3" numbers required in the past are no longer needed on ATVs and snowmobiles. The new stickers include the registration number. You are free to remove old numbers.

The snowmobile/off-road telephone line is answered Monday - Friday, except for holidays, at 317-233-3149, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
