Making history a second time

Gov. O'Bannon at the podium of his inauguration.Gov. O'Bannon being sworn into office.

Four years ago Frank O'Bannon took the oath of office to become Indiana's 47th governor. The event was historic, and Outdoor Indiana photographers were there.

An Indiana governor had not been inaugurated outdoors in more than 60 years. Also, with a high of only 8 degrees F, it was the coldest Jan. 13 on record.

If his first inauguration was the coolest in Indiana history, Gov. Frank O'Bannon's second would be the biggest. The ceremony was held at the RCA dome, a stone's throw from the Statehouse, so 25,000 4th grade students could attend.

Gov. O'Bannon, an avid bird watcher, used an analogy to talk with the students about the need for people to cooperate... "if we don't work together we will be in the same situation as the blue jay [that hogged the bird feeder] found himself: alone. Without the opportunities and support that come in a community, we could be as the other birds, deprived of resources that nourish our lives."

Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan asked everyone to take an oath to do one good deed for another person and to pick up one piece of trash each day.

It is in 4th grade that we learn Indiana history. And as history lessons go, it is a day that these 10-year-olds are likely to remember forever.
