INDIANAPOLIS (March 29, 2007) – Approximately 1.1 million Hoosiers have filed their Indiana income taxes electronically this year, compared to the same period last year. The Indiana Department of Revenue reports that electronic filing of Indiana tax returns is up 12 percent overall for 2007, compared with the same time in 2006.
“Electronic filing with programs like I-File helps to reduce math errors, automatically generates the correct forms for the taxpayer’s situation, figures the county tax and even identifies the school corporation,” Department of Revenue Commissioner John Eckart said, explaining why so many Hoosiers chose electronic filing over mailing in their returns.
To date, electronic filing accounts for 73 percent of all returns processed this filing season,” Eckart said. But the biggest volume of filing is yet to come, as most Hoosiers file close to the deadline.
When taxpayers file electronically, they help save the state 96 cents per return processed. It costs the state $1 to process a paper return, but only 4 cents to process an electronic return. The state processes more than 3 million returns each year.
I-File, which is Indiana’s free online tax filing program, makes it quick and easy for Hoosiers to file Indiana taxes electronically. It also can expedite a taxpayer’s refund within 7 to 14 days, compared with 8 to 12 weeks for paper-filed returns.
“I found I-File to be very user-friendly and easy to use,” said Matt McCutcheon of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Taxpayer compliments like those of McCutcheon echo the results of a survey conducted last year with more than 1,000 taxpayers who used I-File in 2006. The poll revealed that 94 percent of survey participants were satisfied to very satisfied with their I-File experience and that 96 percent would recommend I-File to someone else.
Tuesday, April 17, 2007, is the Indiana tax-filing deadline. Taxpayers can file and pay their state income taxes up to 11:30 p.m. on April 17 through I-File. For more information about I-File, visit http://www.ifile.in.gov
