INDIANAPOLIS, IN-First Lady Cheri Daniels is traveling to Clark Pleasant Intermediate School in Greenwood on Thursday, March 2, 2006. She will read to fifth and sixth grade students at 11:00 a.m. in celebration of Read Across America Week.
Read Across America week originally began as a one-day event to celebrate the joy of reading on March 2, Dr. Seuss's birthday. However, this initiative has grown into a program that encourages everyday reading.
“I have always loved reading, and I used to read to my girls when they were growing up. I can’t think of a more appropriate way to encourage children to read.”
Daniels has been traveling throughout the state to encourage children, parents, and teachers to read. She has been advocating for children’s literacy along with Women’s heart health.
“As the First Lady of Indiana I am very active in encouraging Hoosiers to exercise. Physical fitness is important, but so is reading. Reading is like exercise for the mind. Reading helps us discover new places and travel to far off lands. Books can expand our knowledge, help us learn, and improve our writing skills.”
Daniels along with 48 other gubernatorial spouses have volunteered to be “Ambassadors of Reading.”
