SOUTH BEND, Indiana - Indiana's First Lady Cheri Daniels will participate in First Families Building Homes Across America, a major national initiative of Habitat for Humanity's Women Build department. Spouses of governors in every state have been invited to participate in the construction of a Habitat for Humanity Women Build house with women volunteers in their home state.
On September 14, Daniels will join Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity International to build a home for a single mother with two sons and a nephew under her care. Daniels will be available for comment at 11:20 A.M.
"They give a hand-up, not a hand out. Habitat for Humanity empowers individuals to take responsibility for themselves and their families. I am especially proud to be a part of Women Build. We are not only building a home we are building confidence, skills, futures, and we are empowering women," said Daniels.
Daniels will be joined by 40-50 volunteers to work on the home located at 525 South Liberty Street.
Habitat for Humanity officially formed the Women Build department in 1998. At that time, women crews were building six to eight Habitat for Humanity homes each year. Since then Women Build has completed 350 homes.
