INDIANAPOLIS (August 15, 2007) - Indiana First Lady Cheri Daniels took home two blue ribbons after taking top honors in the annual celebrity cow milking and watermelon seed spitting contests.

"After coming in second in the cow milking contest last year, I vowed to take home first this year. I practiced several times throughout the fair and the hard work paid off," said Daniels. "As far as the watermelon seeds are concerned, I owe that all to growing up in Southern Indiana."

Daniels won the cow milking competition by milking three-fourths of a cup in one minute from Annie, a Holstein from Winamac. She defeated Indiana State Fair Board Director Jim Cole of Vevay in a challenge during the watermelon seed spitting contest on her first try by spitting a seed a distance of 15' 1".

The first lady joined Tim Nannett of New Richmond in the celebrity corn-husking contest against Indianapolis radio personalities Ed Wank and Dave O'Brien from HANK-FM and the 2007 Indiana State Fair Queen Nikki Harris of Markle, among other competitors at the State Fair Pioneer Village. The contest was declared a draw.

At the time Daniels was declared the winner of the cow milking contest, a calf was born at the fairgrounds and named Mitch in honor of the governor.
