NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Lafayette, IN (September 20, 2007) – First Lady Cheri Daniels will speak about her Heart to Heart initiative on Monday, September 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the Loeb Playhouse at the Stewart Center on the campus of Purdue University. Free health screenings will be provided at 4:30 p.m.

Daniels lost her mother to heart disease, which brings this issue close to home. “Heart disease takes too many precious lives each year. It’s up to us to tell the women we love about heart disease and encourage them to eat right and exercise,” said Daniels.

Heart to Heart is a program that encourages Hoosier women to lead heart-healthy lives. The program is designed to educate young women on the risk factors of heart disease and healthy habits for preventing heart disease. Heart to Heart encourages women to have conversations about heart disease with the women they love.

The evening will also include expert advice from Cindy Adams, a nurse practitioner from the Indiana Heart Hospital, who will speak on the basics of heart health and what college-age women can do to reduce their risk. She will be followed by Julie Novak, Professor and Head, School of Nursing Associate Dean, College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences, who will speak about a holistic approach to women’s health, highlighting heart health, and then speak about local and campus resources available to support Purdue women in leading a heart-healthy life.

Heart disease, the number one killer of women, takes too many Hoosier lives each year. In keeping with Indiana’s commitment to supporting healthy, productive citizens, the First Lady of Indiana and the State Department of Health Office of Women’s Health have teamed up to focus on the issue of women’s heart disease.
