INDIANAPOLIS (August 4, 2009) - First Lady Cheri Daniels will host the fifth annual Heartland Walk for Health on Saturday, August 15, at the Indiana State Fair. The Heartland Walk for Health strives to raise awareness that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women and to promote healthy and active lifestyles for all Hoosiers.

"One of the most controllable risk factors for heart disease is a lack of physical activity, so I encourage you and your family to join me for a two-mile walk around the Fairgrounds,” said Daniels. “Whether you’ve been active for years or you’re just beginning a fitness program, it’s always the right time to make a commitment to living a heart-healthy life."

Ed Wank and Dave O’Brien, hosts of The Wank and O’Brien Show on 97.1 HANK FM, will emcee the event. Activities including warm-up exercises, entertainment, massages and free health screenings by Clarian Cardiovascular will begin beside the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand at 8 a.m. Mrs. Daniels will lead the walk around the Track of Champions at approximately 9 a.m.

All participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt, State Fair ribbon, “goodie bag” and light breakfast. Attendees also will be eligible to win a variety of door prizes, such as gift certificates to local businesses, signed items from Indiana athletic teams, and tickets to sporting events and attractions across the state.

Registration is available on the first lady’s Web site at http://heartland.in.gov or through Ken Long & Associates at 317/884-4001. The registration fee includes entry to the Indiana State Fair. Walk-up registrations also will be accepted on the day of the event.

The Heartland Walk for Health is presented by Clarian Cardiovascular through a partnership with the Office of the First Lady, the Indiana State Department of Health Office of Women’s Health and the Indiana State Fair.
