Pupils will get literacy lesson from first lady

CENTERVILLE - Indiana first lady Cheri Daniels will read to first- and second-graders at Rose Hamilton Elementary School next week. Beth Schauss, the school's literacy coach, said Daniels will read two books -- "The Dump Man's Treasures" by Lynn Plourde and "Saturdays and Teacakes" by Lester Laminack -- during her hour-long visit.

"It is an honor to have the first lady of Indiana come and share her love of literacy" with us, Schauss said. "I try to model a love for reading and reading aloud, but it will be nice for them to hear another voice."

Axes and Spam: First Lady Spends Week at Fair

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Forget dignified state dinners and black tie fundraisers - Indiana First Lady Cheri Daniels is having an interesting week at the Indiana State Fair.

Daniels threw an axe during an axe-throwing competition at the Timberworks Lumberjack Show on Wednesday. She didn't quite hit her target, but staff members said she's hoping her aim will be better during a tomato toss next week.

Man spending 48 hours on roof to get help for kids

INDIANAPOLS - Bob Goodrum had no reservations about returning to the Starfish Initiative building's roof to recruit mentors. His enthusiasm for the stunt waned, though, when First Lady Cheri Daniels joined him Wednesday morning by way of a cherry picker. "My first meeting with the governor's wife, and I haven't showered or shaved in 36 hours," he said.

Daniels got over her initial thought that "he might be a little crazy" and saw Goodrum's ploy as a creative way of promoting a good cause. "It's a great way to bring attention to the mentor program," she said. "He's doing a very good job of getting people to step up and be mentors."

BROWNSBURG — Not every customer at Natural Valley Ranch turns heads, but that's exactly what happened on Wednesday when Indiana First Lady Cheri Daniels showed up for equestrian lessons. Marie Damler and her husband Chuck said Daniels did just fine. And the lesson gave Daniels an opportunity to learn some new feats.

Indiana's first lady reads at Lapel

LAPEL – Cheri Daniels, the first lady of Indiana, read the Seuss classic "Are You My Mother?" to the third-grade class of Margie Sturgeon and student teacher Leigh Ann Schnepp. Lapel was the third stop on Daniels' school reading tour Monday, a practice she typically does to stress the importance of reading. Monday, however, was special, as the students celebrated Read Across America Day in honor of Seuss.
