Assignment: Learn how make candy canes
Status: Completed!
First Lady Cheri Daniels started out her assignment by kneading a molten sugar and corn syrup mixture with the help of John Badger, one of the owners of the Martinsville Candy Kitchen.
After kneading on the marble slab, the first lady learned how to spread peppermint flavoring on the molten sugar and corn syrup mixture.
The first lady then proceeded to pull, twist and tug the sugar and syrup mixture onto a metal hook.
One the peppermint oil had been evenly distributed, Mrs. Daniels sectioned the concoction into three parts.
The first lady’s three peppermint candy sections were added to another sugar and corn syrup mixture
John twisted and pulled the candy cane mixture into thin ropes for the first lady to cut.
Mrs. Daniels placed one of the thin candy cane ropes into a slicing machine in order to make candy cane drops.
After creating candy cane drops, the first lady returned to cutting the candy cane rope into small strips.
The last step in Mrs. Daniels’ task involved creating the curved top of the candy cane by hand.
Mrs. Daniels would like to thank the owners of the Martinsville Candy Kitchen, John and Pam Badger, for teaching her how to make handmade candy canes. For further information about the Martinsville Candy Kitchen, please contact 765/342-6390.
