INDIANAPOLIS (February 1, 2012) – First Lady Cheri Daniels today announced the start of the annual Hoosiers Helping Hoosiers state employee food drive. During the month of February, 60 agencies and 261 divisions throughout Indiana state government will coordinate efforts to collect non-perishable items for local food banks and pantries.

“Over the past three years, we have collected more than 246,000 items and over $36,000 for Hoosiers in need,” said Daniels. "I’m certain state employees will rise to the challenge again this year.”

Suggested contributions include canned fruits, vegetables and meats, as well as soup, rice and pasta. Collection bins provided by Gleaners Food Bank are located in the Indiana Government Center cafeterias and outside the Governor’s Office in the State House. Other state government offices across the state have donation boxes located within their individual facilities.

The signature event for the Hoosiers Helping Hoosiers food drive is IndiCANa, a structure building competition with cans. The contest for state employees will be held on Monday, February 27, in the Indiana Government Center South atrium. The first lady will serve as judge for the competition.

Additional information, photos and a list of participating regional food banks will be updated throughout the month at this link: http://fooddrive.in.gov

The food drive will conclude on February 29.
